Career Questions and Answers
PLEASE HELP! What career should I pursue?
Asked by wendy_morena
Right now I am a grade 11 student, I have no idea of what career I should pursue. I definitely want to do something in the Arts. I am good at writing and enjoy it as well.
I also know that I was born with an artistic talent because I was never one of those people who draws and sketches all day. I draw on average, one picture a month, but somehow my drawings come out very well. I want to develop my talent, but what career could I follow?
I am also very good in Multimedia. I love computers and am very good at making videos as well. I love using different camera angles and adding soundtracks to videos to create more drama. Many people say I should do it as a career. I would love to do wedding videos for people as I already did one for my sister and it came out nice. Is a career like that possible?
I play the violin as well and am advancing nicely. I woudn't mind being a music composer but I think that is way ahead of me.
Any recommendations would be great! I don't know what to do with my life after Highschool. Please help!

So you like
- Multimedia
- Are a good judge of art
- Love being surrounded by it.
How about a music producer/sound director/artistic manager for a publisher or other company/layout director/fashin buyer, etc..
What are those? Well, the music producer doesn't make the music but he tells you if the music sounds good and gives it a thumbs up or down. So does the sound director but the sound director can be for all sounds like the ones in commercials, tv shows, jingles, etc...
The artistic manager is also like that but instead of music it deals with visual art, they judge art and say this is good for the cover of this book, magazine, catalog, etc... They could make revisions or changes. It's very nice because you're surrounded by art but don't have to rely on physically painting or making it and selling it for a paycheck.
The layout director sets the layout for a magazine or newspaper and gets it ready for print. This is something you can get into working now if you have skills in Quark Express or other computer programs that deal with layout. You can apply at local newspapers or simple publications, not as a director but as a layout designer assistant. You may be able to do this from home if they let you and it would look good in your resume plus you get a paycheck.
Fashion buyer gets to shop! They get to travel and go around to scout for good looking garments or have people come to them. They order things "I want 5,000 of these shirts" and they make pretty decent money.
I'd say what is most imporant to you?
- Have a career without too much education?
- Have a career that pays well? How much do you want it to pay?
- Have a career that requires an education?
Find one of the three that is most important to you? Then work backwards to find an artistic career that fits into that category. There's a job in arts at every level of education and pay scale.
I'd recommend whatever you do, get an education, (it's very important to get an education) while doing something on the side that's artistic, to get that resume going. Check out your local and national artistic organizations and see if they take student memberships. See which courses they recommend or if they have entry level jobs that you can get involved in now.
As for videos...it's fairly easy to get into the camera-man business. A friend of mine is a camera man for Telemundo. A girlfriend producer of mine worked for Telemundo too now works for MTV. Because it's easy to be a camera man, sometimes it's hard finding a job, you may have to move, the hours are also crazy. Though if you have determination, why not? You could be the next Spieldberg or Anne Leibowitz of video camera talent. Find production studios, look in their jobs section and see what the requirements are to get hired. Production studios range from mom & pop production studios (the kind that do simple wedding videos and local cable commercials), to cable channels (Pie Town productions works for TLC), to local tv news/channels, etc...
You're doing great by searching out and asking, keep doing it, keep searching.
Best of luck!
Business owner.

Well since your good in multi-media there are a lot of options. What about graphic design? animation? film school? or since you like writing a lot about about journalism/editorial design? I am currently majoring in graphic design but want to move to journalism? or even journalism/editorial design to work for a magazine and newspaper, designing fonts and layouts for them. Just a few suggestions!
