Should I call out of work?
Asked by Jamie B
I just started working as a hostess last week, so I want to keep this good impression I have made so far. However, Its supposed to be really bad weather tonight-freezing rain and snow..Last time I worked they had me on for less than four hours and it was a Friday...so I'm concerned I'm going to have drive in the weather just to work a few hours. Is it too soon to call out due to weather, though? Not trying to play hooky. I'm concerned about driving in the weather..especially if there's the risk they will not even need me.

I wouldn't call out of work, since you just started working there but this is a tough question. I know its a safety thing and i'm with you on that I would just drive slowly. Leave your residence earlier. Jobs are harder to come by and you want to always put your best foot forward. You braving the weather while someone else calls in could work in your favor. Please pull over if you need to in a safe place.
Driving in all types of weather. Sometimes long distances. (Midwest)

I think it's a very bad idea to play hooky at work during a recession.

It is really too soon to be taking extra time off. However, if you call and speak to your manager, he may decide that because of the weather, business will be slow and you may not be needed. Give him/her the opportunity to say don't come.

Well, I would call and speak to your manager. Let him know that you are worried and not comfortable driving in this bad weather. Let him know that if he really needs you, you will come in. And go from there...if he needs you, just go but leave early and drive slow. It will pay off in the long run.

I agree with Steve D & nicedoc... You must always keep in mind the type of impression you're leaving on the management's minds. Also, you must realize the reduction in your earnings. If you are unwilling to disregard these deciding factors, maybe you shouldn't call off. Continue to watch the weather reports... They may call & ask you to stay home!
